REGIMENTAL HISTORIES

The Seventeenth Connecticut has never had a book length regimental history written about it. Still, there are some contemporary histories to study. In the 1880’s Colonel William Noble wrote a history of the regiment for The History of Fairfield County. His account is noticeably biased, but no more so than most of the regimental histories published in the post-war period.

In 1886 a serial history of the Seventeenth was printed in the Danbury Times, written by William Warren, a private in Company C. This history was published in 22 parts which covered the service of the regiment from enlistment to muster out. Full of anecdotes and based on Warren’s wartime journal, this history is far more detailed.

For decades, Warren sought out information from his comrades for the purpose of compiling a regimental history. By the time of his death, Warren had amassed 8 large volumes, nearly all typewritten. His Herculean effort went unpublished, a victim of it’s size and the inability of the Seventeenth Connecticut Veteran’s Association to come to terms with Warren.
